Deep Dive: …
🚧
This chapter is under construction. While we’re hard at work, you’re welcome to look around.
  1. It feels inspiring to gain clarity + confidence about what truly fulfills you over time. (In the short term, we can maximize fulfillment within our understanding of what matters, but in the long term, we can lift our ceiling higher by honing what matters). For example, people gradually hone what they truly want in a partner by dating multiple people.
  2. For example, sign up for relevant commitments (e.g., join Intramural Basketball with your company as a way to regularly experience whether it’s important to you to form deep friendships with coworkers).

For example, use your spare time to start pursuing your “own thing.”

  3. People’s Tenets are formed from their lived experiences.
  4. When making big life decisions, people don’t prioritize options that allow them to experience interesting tenets.
  5. And outside of big life decisions, it’s hard to remember to regularly experience interesting tenets.
  6. The exercises in this chapter help you deliberately experience interesting tenets, enabling you to discover more fulfilling and meaningful tenets.

Old Introduction

Introduction

You’ve identified unfamiliar tenets that you need to experience more before you can make an informed decision about whether to hold them as a Sincere Belief. Learning how to explore unfamiliar and interesting values without following them helps avoid blurring the lines between Sincere Beliefs and Sound Bites.

In this exercise, you’ll learn to separate exploring and following values:

  • Exploring values means creating situations that expose you to a new value in practice, and scrutinizing how experiencing this value makes you feel.
  • Following values means allowing the values to influence your decision making and/or feelings.

Goal

You will learn to identify and triage each time you find yourself following a tenet classified as a Sound Bite. In addition, you will have an immediate plan to explore your chosen Sound Bites.

Workbook Output

After you dive into each Sound Bite worth experiencing further, you’ll identify opportunities to design your environment to make experiencing them easy. This step ensures you build experiencing your Sound Bites into your routine.

Tips

  • The same Environment Design approach used for Defensive Narratives can be used here.

Pitfalls

  • Blurring the line between exploring a Sound Bite and following it.
