Deep Dive: …
🚧
This chapter is under construction. While we’re hard at work, you’re welcome to look around.
  1. It can feels exciting and convicted when facing the adversity and unknowns that accompany starting a new life path.
  2. Jump into the fire.

It’s the paradox of life: We dedicate our lives to the pursuit of comfort BUT… avoiding discomfort only leads to more suffering. 👉Humans need struggle, uncertainty, and risk to be happy. Have you ever felt more alive than when you were in the thick-of-it—obsessed with a project, madly in love, or maniacally focused on a goal? Embrace the uncomfortable path if you want change.

  3. Unfortunately, once people start pursuing a new path, they often struggle to maintain their cool-headed conviction in the face of adversity and unknowns.
  4. The exercises in this chapter help you maintain cool-headed conviction in the face of adversity as you pursue it.

Old Introduction

Introduction

When ambitious people feel directionless or mediocre, it’s often because they lack conviction that their current path is bringing them closer to outcomes they care about. That conviction can come from using your new and intentionally-constructed Inner Compass to make decisions about your life direction.

In this exercise, you’ll learn the three steps to making consequential life decisions using your Inner Compass:

  1. List out Your Options
  2. Assess Your Convictions for Each Option
  3. Pick an Option with Conviction
  4. Plan Your Tactical Steps for Following Through
  5. Update your Convictions and remaining Tactical Steps as you progress through each step.

Goal

You’ll have a plan and approach for using your Inner Compass to make consequential life decisions confidently and follow through on them with conviction.

Workbook Output

Methodically using your Inner Compass to make a life or career decision with conviction is only one half of the process. The other half is keeping your convictions in mind as you plan and execute on following through with your decision. This minimizes distractions or pitfalls that may derail you, and also lets you incorporate new learnings and update your convictions on the fly.

Tips

  • Sometimes, non-obvious options end up being the best. Don’t cut the process short after assessing the options you currently feel most drawn towards.

Pitfalls

  • Expecting this process to objectively identify the right option for you. You still have the agency and responsibility to make a decision. This process makes it easier to focus on the aspects of each option that matter the most in the context of your Inner Compass.
