  1. It feels frustrating, frightening, and nerve wracking when a <bad> tenet blocks you from embodying the tenets that fulfill you, in a relatable way. (+ Explain how much better it feels to overcome this).
  2. Unfortunately, fully casting aside existing tenets can take a long time because you need to unlearn something that’s rooted in your world view.
  3. This is bad because until they are cast aside, these bad tenets can block fulfillment, even if you’re trying to follow your fulfilling tenets.
  4. The exercises in this chapter help you plan out measures to avoid the tenets that derail you from embodying your fulfilling tenets, enabling you to feel fulfilled even before you’ve done the hard work needed to fully cast these bad tenets aside.

Old Introduction

Introduction

Left unchecked, Defensive Narratives can hinder your ability to follow your Sincere Beliefs and explore your chosen Sound Bites. These are limiting beliefs you’ve developed from lived experiences, which produced bad habits that became rooted in your identity. Getting all your parts to let go of these limiting beliefs requires gradual unlearning.

As a reminder, these limiting beliefs appear in our lives as reactions to triggers.

To manage Defensive Narrative before they’re fully unlearned, we’ll start by crafting plans for coping with the reactions and triggers of your Defensive Narratives. With a bit of active awareness, these plans will prevent your Defensive Narratives from derailing you from following your Inner Compass.

But to fully free yourself of your Defensive Narratives, we’ll need to gradually work to unlearn and resolve the limiting beliefs of your Defensive Narratives. Once achieved, following your Inner Compass will become second nature, rather than requiring active effort.

Goal

You will have an immediate plan to cope with your Defensive Narratives so they don’t hinder your ability to follow your Sincere Beliefs and explore your chosen Sound Bites. In addition, you will commit to gradually working towards full detachment from your Defensive Narratives.

Workbook Output

After you dive into each Defensive Narrative, you’ll create plans and design your environment to avoid their triggers. This step minimizes the negative impact your Defensive Narratives have on your ability to follow your Inner Compass in the Act phase.
